Housing, inclusion, and social equity: A global perspective

Many nations face the challenge of promoting social inclusion and economic opportunity. Patterns of housing development impact the distribution of life chances and prospects for greater social equity. Are there lessons from around the world for public policy that can be learned from each other? Which countries have put in place policies that are improving mobility? What can be done better?

On November 30, the Center on Children and Families at Brookings, Washington University in St. Louis, Duke University, and the National University of Singapore hosted an event featuring a keynote address from the deputy prime minister of Singapore, and contributions from scholars and policymakers from the U.S., Singapore, the United Kingdom, and India.

Foreign Workers Get Sent More Chicken Rice Packets Thanks to Facebook Comments

It’s not everyday that you’re offered free food while you’re just walking along the street, but for some foreign workers, last weekend was one such day. 

Earlier this month, Select and Stamford Catering visited a workers’ dormitory in Kranji to give away 500 packets of Chicken Rice to foreign workers. Last Sunday afternoon, they took to the streets of Little India, again to give out packets of chicken rice to foreign workers, but this time with an added element of surprise.

Following the previous giveaway, Stamford Catering urged online users to leave comments of goodwill to thank foreign workers for their oftentimes unrecognised contribution to Singapore. 

The response from members of the public was overwhelming, and the campaign garnered over 2,000 comments in the space of two weeks. To relay these well-wishes to the foreign workers, each packet of food distributed on Sunday had an individual message printed on the lid for an added personal touch.

PP: Two thumbs up for Select and Stamford Catering!  This is a really good initiative. The younger generation needs to learn to be appreciative of all types of workers  - especially those who willingly do the work that most Singaporeans shunt.
