RESERVED ELECTED PRESIDENT APPLIES TO THE CHINESE RACE ALSO
By Singapore Matters FB page

The whole purpose of a reserved election is to ensure that the presidency is indeed rotated among the different races.

This reserved election mechanism applies to three main racial groups.

These three groups are:
1. Chinese
2. Malay
3 'Indian and others'.

From comments, it seems that people do not realize that the reserved election mechanism applies also to the Chinese race.

If in the event that for 5 elections, the elected President is either Malay, Indian, Eurasian or of some other minority races, then an election will be reserved for a Chinese to be elected president.

This was made clear by Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam during a dialogue with 1,300 grassroots leaders and residents from Central Singapore District at ITE College Central in September 2016.

Since the reserved election applies EQUALLY TO ALL THE THREE MAIN GROUPS including Chinese, the argument that it is racist or discriminatory can be thrown out of the window. Likewise for the argument that it lower the bar since all candidates have to meet the same eligibility criteria.
